Car audio has not only taken the car industry by storm, but now includes home theater, and other speaker systems

Car audio has grown at an incredible pace over the past two decades. There are rumors that some people have spent more on their audio systems than many people in America earn in an entire year!

There is no end to this in sight and it looks like the only other audio field that can compare in sales volume, is the home theater.

In the early 1980's, car audio systems began making their run into the marketplace by being thrust into the teenage culture.

Loud stereo systems had always been the stamp that branded the sixteen to nineteen year old age bracket. However, with advances in speaker technology, car stereos, and better installation practices, car speakers were not only loud, but they rumbled.

Car audio has been influenced both by the rise in digital and computer technology as well as an influx in engineering interest (probably from 80’s teens reaching adulthood).

The fact of the matter is, audio systems will continue to be an interest to car enthusiasts and are already expanding into car theaters and car gaming.

Audio systems and their influence

Manufacturers have been “cross selling” their systems quite well over the years.

Alpine, Pioneer, Sony, and Kenwood have all started multiple product lines to encourage loyal followers of their products to also include them in their other audio needs. After all, if you enjoy Kenwood’s car speakers, you just might try their Home Theater audio line as well.

Car audio has also pushed the envelope in the computer industry as well. Noise cancelling headphones and wireless headsets are all based on technology that is readily available in the auto audio world.

Audio box enclosures have also been an influence of some of the newer outdoor speakers. An emphasis on sealed and tight enclosures has not only improved sound quality, but it also helps in withstanding the elements.

Another arena that speaker manufacturers have gotten into, is waterproof marine speakers. This area has grown in both popularity and quality.

With enclosures coming in all shapes and sizes, a customer can outfit anything from their speedboat to their pontoon.

Speaker enclosures have even advanced to the level that salt water is no longer harmful for the speakers. This is good news for saltwater boaters.

Speakers have come a long way since the early days. Now they are:

  • Wireless
  • Placed in a stealth fashion (inside walls and ceilings)
  • Portable and multi-functional (baby monitors can be turned into PA units)
  • Getting back to car audio

The point of discussing all of this is to highlight the blending of the lines.

A car audio system utilizing new technologies, can be interchanged with most home theater system. The control units, mp3 players and DVD players can all be interchanged.

Speakers are becoming that way as well. The audio industry is moving to encapsulate every target area. It makes sense and it bonds the consumer with the brand.

Some things, of course, are unique to each area. For instance, a stereo speaker stand won’t have many uses in a car. Just like a waterproof marine speaker won’t be that valuable inside a home.

Needless to say the areas of separation in car audio, home theater, outside speakers and waterproof marine speakers is decreasing.

Finding the right place to locate the audio speakers you need

With all the information on the Internet, it is easy to become distracted and confused. There is a plethora of “help” out there.

We have found that simple is better and have produced a list of merchants that allows the buyer (or potential buyer) the ability to find what they want, at a price that is nothing less than incredible.
