Surround Sound Headphone – Market For Surround Sound Headphones On The Climb |

August 13, 2004 By: Eva Miller Surround Sound Headphone – Market For Surround Sound Headphones On The ClimbThe surround sound headphone line is still in its infancy in Hong Kong and mainland China. While many makers offer surround sound models, they currently account for as little as 2 percent to 20 percent of their total output. But this could change quickly in the next couple of years. As chipset costs fall and the number of applications for surround sound grows, demand is predicted to rise, and fast. Makers anticipate that their production of surround sound headphones could climb by 20 percent in just one year. With volumes climbing so fast, prices are heading south at almost the same rate. It is estimated that prices will fall by 20 percent in 2004 alone. Low-end models are currently selling at $10 while high-end models go for as much as $70. The price difference is largely due to the technologies employed in producing the headphones. Almost all makers produce 5.1-channel models, but makers in Hong Kong offer a choice of two underlying technologies--SRS Labs for low-end models, and Dolby for high-end units. Wireless models are few as yet but buyers can expect to see their numbers increase on the market as makers are now developing surround sound headphones that support wireless operation.
