Taking the sound with you: Wireless speakers and wireless home theater

Wireless speakers have made for a nice paradigm shift. Once it was about pushing sound to where you were. No longer. Now sound can be taken with you. That can be via a wireless headset, or even the speaker itself.

Cordless baby monitors were one of the first uses for the wireless speaker movement. Nothing like appealing to parents' need for safety. It worked. The speaker industry hit the mother load.

Wireless speakers also created more options in the wireless home theater world. Surround sound got easier in an environment where cords had been a problem. No more tripping on the subwoofer cord, now it sits under the couch unnoticed until the sound is emitted.

Surround systems weren't the only places wireless technology pushed. Outside speakers also benefited from the new movement. The great outdoor grilling sessions could now be smoothed along with tunes from James Taylor.

The uses of wireless speakers have been mentioned above but beg a quick recap:

  • Belt clip a small wireless speaker so you can monitor your baby

  • Clean surround sound placement

  • Turn your PC into a wire free zone

  • Allows for communication around the house via intercom

Whether you are looking for a bookshelf speaker modeled system or something that is used via remote, a wireless set-up can be used.

Imagine, hi-fi audio that is now portable…

Who to choose?

The players in wireless sound are smaller than those tethered by the black wire. That makes the choices easier. The major ones are:

  • Sony
  • JBL
  • Infinity
  • Pioneer
  • RCA
  • Advent
  • Phillips

The above are all safe bets. The key is to find them at the best discount price. Color, size, and personal tastes in sound are also key factors.

What is possible?

Imagine turning your den into a wireless home theater system with surround sound complete with the rumblings of deep bass and shrills of high-end treble. Oh, and doing so at a low price. Wireless makes it possible.

What about throwing together a 7 hour continual play music collection for that next party or special occasion without having complex audio equipment?

Even better…making that music accessible in every room of the house with mini speakers and no wires. Again, at a low price. A computer and wireless speakers can do that.

With prices coming down, the imagination is the only factor with a wireless speaker system, whereas, the budget once was.

What is the advantage?

What isn't the advantage is more the question. Obviously, wires are restrictive. They not only determine the placement of the speakers, but they also present problems.

Wires get old. They become targets for the teeth of a dog. A few trips from a toddler and not only is an emergency room visit eminent, but the wires will need to be replaced as well (assuming that the entire stereo system did not come crashing to the ground).

With a wireless speaker set-up, the speakers can be moved as the room changes. Rooms need to change. It adds new life to an existing space to change things up. Wireless speakers can flow with that. In fact, they become no different than a end table.

Wireless also removes restrictions on portability. Pick-up and go becomes the model. The baby sleeping no longer is reason for the parent to stay within ear reach or within the hearing distance of the monitor that is plugged in.

In short, wireless makes things easier. That is the ideal in technology: improve life.

Where to find the deals …

While the brands are limited, the choices are not. From wireless home theater systems, to PC speaker systems, the options are abundant. However, the price breaks are out there.

Wireless systems can be had for an inexpensive price. Yet, it might take weeks of tireless searching to find them. If you enjoy that type of thing, then go for it.
